Tenders Are Invited Supply and Installation of Microfeeders and Maize Flour Fortification Premix for Small-Scale Millers
Malawi continues to face high levels of micronutrient deficiencies, particularly among children
under five years of age and women of reproductive age, largely due to diets do not provide
adequate nutrients on a regular basis and a diet dominated by maize flour dishes. To address this,
the Government of Malawi gazetted the mandatory fortification of commonly consumed foods
in 2015 and this includes maize flour that is branded and sold on the market. with essential
micronutrients.
Despite the regulatory framework, fortification compliance remains low among small- and
medium-scale maize millers, particularly those operating hammer mills, due to limited access to
appropriate fortification equipment and consistent supplies of fortification premix. Under the
FOCUS Project, Self Help Africa (SHA), in partnership with GAIN, seeks to strengthen food
fortification systems in a number of districts by improving access to fortification equipment and
premix.
2. Objective of the Assignment
The objective of this assignment is to procure, supply, and install fortification equipment and
accessories to enable selected small-scale maize millers to fortify maize flour in compliance with
Malawi Maize flour Standard, MS34:2011.
3. Scope of Work
3.1 Supply of Microfeeders
The supplier shall supply fifteen (15) microfeeders suitable for use at small-scale hammer mills.
The microfeeders must be compatible with hammer mill operations, capable of accurate and
consistent dosing of maize fortification premix, and suitable for rural operating environments.
Considering the mills that will be targeted, the micro feeder should satisfy the following
parameters among others
1. Premix hopper size 5-20kg
2. Feeding Rate: 5-35grams per minute
3. Power: 220 Volts
